The Electricity Directorate was formed in 1948 to develop the power supply system and adopt a plan. After forming the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in 1959, new momentum was transmitted to the power sector. In 1980, the Directorate of Electricity merged with WAPDA.

Then WAPDA was separated by presidential order after the independence of our country. Subsequently, the Rural Electrification Board (REB) and the Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA) divided the BPDB.
