Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO) was formed in November 1996 as the first power distribution company under the Companies Act 1994. Over 25 years, DESCO has developed power distribution management, provided customer service, implemented efficient management activities, and ensured transparency and accountability in all areas.

DESCO takes far-reaching action to serve people and contribute to national development for making a digital Bangladesh which the Government announces within 2021. DESCO has expanded the use of information technology to establish good governance by increasing customer service quality and institutional transparency and accountability.

History Of Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO)

On 24 September 1998, DESCO started commercial operation in the Mirpur area in Dhaka. The company expanded its distribution area by supplying electricity at Gulshan and Tongi in 2003 & 2007. DESCO provides electricity in the zone of North Dhaka.

In 1998, the ratio of DESCO’s electricity consumption was 46% in the total people of Dhaka city. demand for electricity was 1018.9MW. Every goal of service is for the customer’s requirements.

In 2004, DESCO opened a Sales and distribution program. The company started a new journey metering system in 2005. Now it converts to the Smart Meter System. DESCO has started other functions for its customers, such such as the 2008 e-governance, the 2010 electronic bill payment system, the 2014 in life payment gateway, and other services.

The company has taken a mega plan to cover its operational area with an underground electricity networking system. Two hundred seventy kilometers with a 33kv underground line will materialize within 2025. The total system loss of DESCO is 7.18.

According to DESCO’s Articles of Association, DESCO is currently governed by a 12 (bar) member board. Mr. Mohang Selim Uddin, an Additional Secretary to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, is the Chairman of the Company.

DESCO Distribution System

DESCO is not a power generation company. It is a power distributor company. It covers about 400 squire kilometers in the northern zone of Dhaka city in 18 distribution departments, including Mirpur, Badda, Gulshan, Banani, Mohakhali, Uttara, Pallabi, Baridhara, Kafrul, Kalyanpur, Cantonment, Uttar Khan, Dakshin Khan, Purbachal, and Tongi.

DESCO gets electricity from the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the,e power grid company. After that, DESCO distributes the power among the declared incentive areas.
