Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) signed an agreement with AES (Allied Energy Systems) to set up a power plant in Meghnaghat for 22 years electricity purchase contract. BPDB leased 35 acres of land on the bank of River Meghna to set up the plant, which is Meghnaghat Power Limited. In November 2002, the plant started its operation.
UK company CDC Globeleq finally purchased the plant through various shifts in 2007. The plant contributes 9% of the electricity demand in Bangladesh with the supply of domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes.
